‘He’s finished!’ – Do you agree with Stan Collymore’s view on Rooney?

first_imgStan Collymore believes it is the end of Wayne Rooney unless he leaves Manchester United. He was speaking on Monday Night Feist Night with Mark Saggers and said the all the England captain brings to the table for his £300,000-a-week wage packet, is drill the odd ball from one flank to the other.Collymore believes that Louis van Gaal must bench his captain and if that does not restore him to his previous form, then Rooney must leave the club.He also thinks the reluctance of both Van Gaal and Roy Hodgson to drop Rooney is detrimental to the careers of Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane.Manchester United fans got involved with the debate on Twitter and the majority backed the assertions put forward by Collymore.See the best reactions below and leave your opinion in the comments section below. Is Stan right? Would Sir Alex Ferguson have axed Rooney by now? What do you think?last_img read more

Show your earmarks

first_imgIT’S not the sexiest issue in national politics, but ending the practice of secret earmarks in congressional spending is, like state redistricting, one of those wonky issues that could have a profoundly beneficial effect on representative politics. An earmark is a line-item request for funding of pet projects that members of Congress insert into major appropriations bills. The best part (for them) is they don’t have to disclose who stuck the request in. This practice is directly responsible for fiascoes such as the “Bridge to Nowhere” in Alaska, which had no practical value other than sending more than $300 million in federal funds into the state’s economy. (Thankfully, that project has been dropped.) And, as with redistricting, all the politicians say they are for ending this practice. But what they do is another story. Republican Reps. Elton Gallegly of Thousand Oaks, Howard “Buck” McKeon of Santa Clarita, Gary Miller of Brea and Jerry Lewis of Redlands would not share. Nor would Democrat Reps. Hilda Solis of El Monte, Adam Schiff of Pasadena, Linda Sanchez of Cerritos and Jane Harmon of El Segundo. Shame on them. Only a light on the proceedings can stop outrageous pork-barrel spending and allow federal funds to pay for things that make sense. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Open-meeting victory

first_imgSupervisors reverse years-old suppression of public comment. If they could get away with it, elected officials at every level of government would probably ban unsolicited public comment at meetings altogether. They often think their time is too important to be taken up by the contrary, pointless or odd observations of members of the public who have nothing better to do than come to public meetings and speak. Luckily for the public, they have not yet figured out a way to do this legally. Open-meeting laws require that elected officials oblige us with some forum to comment on their actions – no matter how much it annoys them. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. The Los Angeles City Council recently tightened rules on language use and allows only two minutes per speaker. On controversial topics, the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education has typically limited speakers to a total of seven – even on important issues such as eminent domain of neighborhoods. But it’s the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors – the body most insulated from the wrath of voters – that placed the tightest comment rules on regular folks. Last week, the supervisors voted to drop the restrictions in place for 15 years. We’d praise the move, except this was the same body that for years happily limited citizens from addressing them to once every three months. As well, the reversal stemmed not from a revelation that suppressing public comment was wrong, but because a complaint was made. It’s the right decision for the wrong reasons. But, hopefully, this change will stop further encroachments on the public’s right to address its elected representatives.last_img read more

Ex-England striker: ‘I would NOT start Rooney in the first game’ of Euro 2016!

first_imgFormer England striker Kevin Phillips has told talkSPORT he would start Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy in the Three Lions’ first game of this summer’s European Championship, rather than Manchester United star Wayne Rooney. The strikers have excelled for Tottenham and Leicester this term, hitting 25 and 24 Premier League goals respectively as they reside in the top two of the scoring charts. On the other hand, Rooney has netted just seven times in the league, but he has still been tipped for a starting role with England as he is captain of Roy Hodgson’s team.Few agree with this stance, believing the Three Lions’ best chance of success would be utilising the most in-form strikers, and Phillips told Drivetime that he too shares this viewpoint. When asked if he’d start Kane and Vardy in the first game of the Euros, the eight-time capped forward said: “I’ve had to answer this question quite a few times, and I have to say I would.“I’m a firm believer that we need to pick players who are bang in form going into the Euros, and in Kane and Vardy, there are no two better strikers in the Premier League at the moment.“Obviously there’s a big argument for Rooney. But me, personally, I wouldn’t start Wayne Rooney in the first game. I watched him last night [v West Ham], and he didn’t look at it.“So everyone will have their say, but for me if you put those two on the pitch you are guaranteed goals.”Phillips scored 30 goals in the 1999/2000 Premier League season, ending the campaign as winner of both the Golden Boot and the European Golden Shoe. His form for Sunderland saw him called up to the England squad for Euro 2000, but despite being the best goalscorer in Kevin Keegan’s selection, he never once played in the competition, as the Three Lions were knocked out in the group stages. He believes taking in-form strikers is much more important than big names, and Phillips suggested that both Jermain Defoe and Andy Carroll could be good options for Hodgson to call upon this summer.Quizzed about Defoe’s possible inclusion, the former Black Cats attacker added: “Possibly [he should be selected].“I was listening to Sam [Allardyce]’s quotes from the last 48 hours, that if Roy needs someone who’s bang in form at the moment, who can come off the bench and get you a goal, then Jermain Defoe is certainly an option.“But also, Andy Carroll is an option. When you look at the England squad, there isn’t someone who comes off the bench and offers that different dimension – that aerial threat.“There are players who, if they finish the season strongly, then Roy has a bit of a dilemma.”last_img read more

Attorneys who won Spector $900,000 from ex-assistant quit case

first_imgIn the Spector-Blaine case, she maintained in her court papers that the $635,000 was a gift from Spector and that the $425,000 was to be used to help finance a movie called “3:15” about a teacher’s efforts to reach out to underprivileged children. Spector hoped the film, written by Takei, would “rehabilitate his tarnished image,” according to Blaine’s court documents. Production of the movie was being handled by 3:15 Productions. On Aug. 30, Levinson Arshonsky & Kurtz also withdrew as part of Spector’s legal team defending him in a wrongful death suit filed against him by Clarkson’s mother, Donna Clarkson. Spector’s current attorney in the wrongful death case is C.M. Sheedy and a hearing in that case is scheduled Wednesday in Pasadena Superior Court. Spector’s criminal case trial ended Sept. 26 with jurors deadlocked 10-2 in favor of conviction. Former John Gotti lawyer Bruce Cutler resigned from Spector’s defense team near the end of the music producer’s trial, citing a difference of opinion over who would deliver the defense’s closing argument. Spector told reporters he was concerned that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler disliked Cutler because Fidler once yelled at the lawyer in front of the jury. Three other members of Spector’s defense team — Bradley Brunon, Roger J. Rosen and Linday Kenney Baden — resigned or were dismissed within one week after Fidler declared a mistrial. Only two attorneys from Spector’s criminal trial remain: forensics specialist Christoper Plourd and Dennis Riordan, who played a pivotal role during the trial’s jury instructions. Prosecutors are trying Spector for a second time and a hearing is scheduled today. Spector was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. He is best known for his layered “wall of sound” technique with such groups as the Crystals, the Ronettes and the Ramones. He also did some work with the Beatles. They obtained a $900,000 judgment for record producer Phil Spector against a former assistant, but members of the law firm who represented him have quit the case, according to court papers obtained today. Much like what happened with the legal team that represented Spector in the shooting death of House of Blues VIP host and actress Lana Clarkson at his Alhambra home in February 2003, there have been changes of faces among lawyers representing him in his civil cases. Spector sued former assistant Michelle Blaine in September 2005. He maintained she took $425,000 from his pension fund without his permission and did not repay him $635,000 she used to buy a Costa Mesa home. The two sides settled the case in February. Mooney signed an order allowing the Encino law firm of Levinson Arshonsky & Kurtz to step down from the case. “There has been a complete breakdown of the attorney-client relationship,” the firm’s court papers state. Spector refused to cooperate with his lawyers and would not pay their fees and costs, according to the firm’s court papers. Although the judgment was previously entered in favor of Spector against Blaine, he still needed lawyers to begin post-judgment collection efforts, the firm’s court papers state. Spector is now represented by the Woodland Hills firm of Dion-Kindem & Crockett, according to his old legal team’s court papers. William E.
